Das ursprünglich unter der Bezeichnung Engin Principal de Combat

(EPC) vom Atelier de Construction d´Issy-les-Moulineaux (AMX)

entwickelte und ab 1985 als Leclerc bezeichnete Fahrzeug wurde

offi ziell am 14. Januar 1992 in die französische Armee eingeführt.

Die Serienproduktion des derzeit modernsten französischen

Kampfpanzers erfolgte bei der Firma Giat. Als erstes Regiment wurde

das 501e/503e Régiment de Chars de Combat (RCC) in Mourmelon

mit dem Leclerc ausgerüstet. Die Serienproduktion erfolgte in

Baulosen, im französischen als Tranche de Production (T. 1 bis T. 6)

bezeichnet, die sich in Details voneinander unterscheiden. Durch

den Einbau eines automatischen Ladesystems für die 120 mm/L 52

F 1-Glattrohrkanone konnte der Ladeschütze eingespart und die

Fahrzeugbesatzung auf drei Mann, bestehend aus Kommandant

(links im Turm), Richtschütze (rechts im Turm) und Fahrer,

reduziert werden. Als Sekundärbewaffnung stehen ein koaxiales

12,7mm MG und ein 7,62 mm Fla-MG zur Verfügung. Mit dem im

Turmdach installierten unabhängigen HL-70 Beobachtungsgerät

(mit Nachtsichtkanal und Laser-Entfernungsmesser) kann der

Kommandant bereits die nächsten Ziele aufklären und seinem

Richtschützen zuweisen. In den hinteren Turmseiten sind insgesamt

2 x 9 Becher der Nebelmittelwurfanlage integriert. Als Antrieb

dient ein SACM V8X-1500 Hyperbar Dieselaggregat, das in der

Funktionsweise stark einer Gasturbine ähnelt und bei 2500 U/min

1500 PS Leistung entwickelt. Bei einem Gefechtsgewicht von 54.500

kg beschleunigt der Leclerc von 0 auf 32 km/h in ca. fünf Sekunden,

die Höchstgeschwindigkeit beträgt 71 km/h auf der Straße und ca.

50 km/h im Gelände. Der mitgeführte Kraftstoffvorrat von 1300

l ermöglicht eine Reichweite von ca. 550 km auf der Straße. Den

ersten Kampfeinsatz erlebte der Leclerc im Rahmen von KFOR im

Juni 1999 beim raschen Vorstoß des „Gefechtsverbandes Leclerc“

von Mazedonien aus nach Kosovska Mitrovica im Norden des

Kosovo.

This vehicle that was originally developed by the engineering

works at Issy-les-Moulineaux (AMX) under the designation “Engin

Principal de Combat” (EPC) and known from 1985 as the “Leclerc”,

was offi cially introduced into the French Army on 14

th

January 1992.

This state –of-the-art French battle tank went into production with

the French company GIAT. The fi rst regiment to be equipped with

the Leclerc was 501/503 RCC (tank regiment) at Mourmelon. It

was then produced in series designated by the French T.1 to T.6,

which differ from each other only in detail. The incorporation of

an automatic loading system for the 120 mm/L 52 F 1 smooth

barrelled cannon dispenses with the loader and reduced the crew

to three men: commander (left in turret), gunner (right in turret)

and driver. As secondary armament it has a coaxial 12.7 mm MG

and a 7.62 mm AA MG. With the independent HL-70 observation

unit (with night vision and laser range-fi nder) installed in the roof

of the turret, the commander can reconnoitre the next target

for his gunner. In the rear of the turret are 2 x 9 smoke grenade

dischargers. It is powered by an SACM V8X-1500 Hyperbar Diesel

unit which in method of operation is very similar to a gas turbine

and develops 1500 hp at 2500 rpm. With a combat weight of 54,500

kg the Leclerc accelerates from 0 to 32 km/h in approx. 5 seconds

and has a maximum road speed of 71 km/h and approx. 50 km/h

off road. The 1300 litre fuel tank it carries gives it a range of approx.

550 km on the road. The tank was fi rst used in combat with KFOR

in June 1999 in the rapid advance of the ´Leclerc combat unit´ from

Macedonia to Kosovska Mitrovica to the north of Kosovo.
